We organise our sessions so that the children can choose from, and work at, a range of activities and, in doing so, build up their ability to select and work through a task to its completion. The children are also helped and encouraged to take part in adult-led small and large group activities which introduce them to new experiences and help them to gain new skills, as well as helping them to learn to work with others.

We are passionate about children’s health and their physical development

Outdoor activities contribute to children’s health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them. The children have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to take part in outdoor child-chosen and adult-led activities, as well as those provided in the indoor playroom.

The pre-school staff organise each session to involve the children in a wide range of activities, fulfilling the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. A typical session will involve group sessions incorporating group registration. During these sessions, the children are encouraged to talk to the group and gradually acquire the confidence to speak out in front of their peers in a warm and supportive atmosphere. Some of the other activities planned for a session will be directly supervised; others may take the form of free-play.

In addition to group activities, children receive plenty of individual attention.

The types of activities on offer to the children during a session may include creative work, play dough, construction toys, small world toys, puzzles, games, sand, water and cooking. In particular, emphasis is placed on language, literacy and mathematical skills. Books are always available in the comfortable reading corner and the children are encouraged to treat them with respect.

Children have plenty of opportunity to use up some of their energy, joining in group activities with singing, dancing, drama and playing musical instruments. We use our secluded outdoor area during every session where the children have the opportunity to take part in sand and water play, chase bubbles or play more organised games involving hoops, hopping and the parachute.

Tuesday afternoons are dedicated to Rising 4’s only (R4’s). The R4 sessions are open to children who will become 4 years old in the academic year, the year before they start school. These sessions involve specific and targeted activities relevant to their age. The aim is to help prepare the children for Primary School and develop friendships that they will take with them to ‘big school’.

Activities contribute to children’s health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them.
